We were pleased to see the return of the excellent Popcop blog, after it was briefly shut down due to a mistake by its hosts, Google. As Scotland’s representative in the global Music Alliance Pact, which boasts 36 member sites, it has an important role to play by recommending Scottish artists to its foreign friends. Moreover, Popcop’s forum is a lively source of debate and the site has a great bunch of links. Visit the all new site at: www.thepopcop.co.uk

Glasgow’s newly renovated studio space, House Practice Studios, is calling on bands to get in touch to perform at the venue launch in August. The owners aim to make the two sites into places bands can hang out, get advice and record in a relaxed space. Email: alan@housepractisestudios.com

Festival season continues across Scotland and we are particularly excited by Doune The Rabbit Hole, taking place at Doune Castle on 30-31 July. Not only does it offer UTR favourites such as Meursault, Withered Hand and Rozi Plain, it has a retro twist with nouveaux mods Modus and Le Bof. Meanwhile the Greenside Hotel in Leslie will be hosting Gig In The Car Park on 7-8 August, with more than 40 emerging acts. The Wizard Festival takes place 30 miles outside Aberdeen on 27-28 August, with emerging stars Hip Parade, Roots System and Pearl & The Puppets joining Sandi Thom and the Happy Mondays. www.wizardfestival.com

Back in the capital a huge range of events caters for all kinds of tastes in August, with most focusing heavily on local talent. The Edge www.theedgefestival.com is the largest and takes place across many city venues. Acoustic Edinburgh www.acousticedinburgh.com features an eclectic line up which includes an unplugged set by hip-hop act Stanley Odd.

Taking place on 28-29 August, Retreat www.retreatfestival.co.uk in St Paul’s Church on Pilrig Street provides an excellent opportunity to hear some great local bands. Finally, the Forest Fringe www.forestfringe.co.uk will host a plethora of amazing talent throughout the month, as well as the electronica Ultrachip Festival on 21-22 August.

Born To Be Wide Edinburgh Night Thurs 5th August The Electric Circus, 36 Market Street, Edinburgh EH1 1DF BORN TO BE WIDE NIGHT TO CELEBRATE CAPITAL’S MUSIC SCENE Scotland’s leading music social club, Born To Be Wide [BTBW], is to host a special celebration of Edinburgh’s music scene with live previews by local bands and DJs selecting their favourite four tracks by acts from the capital. Taking place at the Electric Circus on Thursday 5 August, the night will feature ten-minute taster sets by acts performing at various music events taking place during the month. These include The Edge, Retreat, Acoustic Edinburgh, Forest Fringe and the Jazz Festival. Guests will also have the opportunity to win golden tickets in a capital music quiz. “Edinburgh’s music scene is more vibrant than it has been for a generation, and in August musicians will be challenging the dominance of theatre, comedy and mingers squeezing into corsets in the name of burlesque,” says BTBW co-organiser Olaf Furniss. “This is an excellent opportunity for both visitors and locals to catch some of the great acts who make things happen throughout the year and get a taste of the music events being hosted during the Fringe.” In addition to the live previews by artists including Meursault, Stanley Odd, Carrie Mac and Emily Scott – which will take place on the hour and half hour – key figures from the city’s scene will play their favourite records by Edinburgh bands. DJs include the owners of venues Cabaret Voltaire, Sneaky Pete’s and Electric Circus, the BBC’s Vic Galloway, Avalanche Record shop owner Kevin Buckle and the promoters of many of the month’s big music events. “The response has been amazing,” says Furniss. “All the musicians, event organisers and DJs invited to take part, said ‘yes.’ It is going to be great to have all these acts in one place and to hear what records end up being played.” Members of the public posting their favourite four tracks by Edinburgh acts on the BTBW Facebook page will be given a place on the guest list. Last August BTBW invited musicians and Fringe performers to play half-hour, Scottish-themed DJ sets where the genre was determined by a wheel of fortune. Guests included porn star Ben Dover selecting a half hour of Scottish rock, actor Tam Dean Burn choosing Scottish punk and veteran manager Bruce Findlay taking care for Scottish folk. In 2008 author Irvine Welsh and songwriter Kristin Hersh graced the decks playing a selection of their all-time favourite tracks. Loopallu is delighted to announce the second batch of acts appearing for it’s sixth outing in the west coast of Scotland’s picturesque village of Ullapool this September.

First up we can confirm one of the most eagerly anticipated new acts in the UK (having only played 2 London shows to date), Mt Desolation will be joining us on the Saturday in the Big Top.

Not only is this Alt-County group fronted by Tim Rice-Oxley and Jesse Quin (who are better known in their roles with Keane), their debut album due for release later this year also features performances from members of The Killers, Mumford & Sons, Noah And The Whale, The Long Winters and Pete Roe.

Also added to the bill are the wonderful Aberfeldy who are set to release their third album ‘Somewhere to Jump From’ on August 23rd and rising traditional music stars Skerryvore.
These acts join other recent announcements, Scottish indie heroes Idlewild, Turin Brakes who make their first ever Highland Festival appearance, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards ‘Best Live Act’ (2010) nominee Adrian Edmondson and the Bad Shepherds, local favourites The Vatersay Boys and a touch of electronic folk from Silver Columns.

The ‘Little Fest in the West’ has built up an amazing reputation over the past five years, becoming the perfect way to say farewell to the festival season.

Situated in the pretty fishing village of Ullapool, on the shores of Loch Broom in the North West Highlands Loopallu is a weekend for all. With activities for all ages and music for all ears, it’s been described as a family gathering you’d actually like to go to!

Born To Be Wide also organised the Wide Days conference and showcase event in Edinburgh on April 8, which included leading digital music experts, music lawyers and managers, as well as bringing together all of Scotland’s key festival promoters on one platform. Born To Be Wide, also co-hosted a weekend of new Scottish talent in Berlin on May 21-22. Among the topics to be covered by the Born To Be Wide seminars are music management and how to get your music used in film, television and adverts. MIDAS Acoustic showcase at the Ironworks Inverness, tonight, 27th May: features a mix of established and up and coming acts. The excellent Claire Campbell, who fronts Abagail Grey has been forced to pull out due to illness. Her debut album, Long Case Clock Suspension, was produced by Chris Geddes from Belle & Sebastian and has also played on albums such as ‘The Boy with the Arab Strap’ (Belle & Sebastian) and ‘Ballad of the Broken Seas’ (Isobel Campbell & Mark Lannegan).
