Roman Nose, The Scotsman Track of the Month, March 2013

Glasgow-based techno trio ROMAN NOSE burst into the collective consciousness at last year’s T In The Park when their T Break appearance had to be cancelled after a pint was spilled on the sound desk.
However, the band were later upgraded to a slot in a packed King Tut’s tent, where their ferociously excellent combination of screaming synths and bass-heavy beats, combined with a penchant for scary masks, went down a storm. Last month Roman Nose self-released their fantastic debut EP, Youthclubbed, which has picked up much-deserved airplay on Ally McCrae’s BBC Radio 1 show and Jim Gellatly’s In:Demand Uncut. They will be appearing live at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards (officialsama.co.uk) at Glasgow’s Garage tomorrow night, where they are also nominated for the Best Electronic Act gong. Returning to the subject of T Break, applications are now open for Scottish bands to perform at T In The Park. Submissions from all genres are invited and acts should send links to 3 of their strongest songs, which will be considered by a panel of music industry judges. The deadline is 29 March, apply at www.tennents.com/tbreak

Two years ago RockNess co-founder Robert Hicks withdrew from the festival to concentrate on managing Rachel Sermanni, who is released on his label Middle Of Nowhere Records. The label is now set to expand its roster with Pete Roe, who is closely involved with the Communion/Mumford & Sons scene which helped Sermanni early in her career. Full details www.monr.co.uk

Glasgow promoters A Quiet Night In launch their first Mini-Take Over Festival in a multi-venue format on 6 April at ABC, Broadcast, The Art School and Nice ‘N’ Sleazy. Former track of the month artist Garden of Elks release their second single Floaty on 18 March, which was recorded by Matthew Scott from fellow Highlands act PAWS. Tonight sees them support Campfires In Winter at Nice ‘N’ Sleazy where there will be limited-edition cassette singles available. Listen here https://soundcloud.com/gardenofelks/floaty/s-57rTn

Good news for Dundee’s music scene. The Doghouse will reopen this month under the new name 20 Rocks, with Dougie Black continuing as the venue’s live booker.

And still in the City Of Discovery, local act Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward and Fisher recently collaborated with Scottish folk legend Dougie MacLean to record a new version of Caledonia. The song was originally popularised when Frankie Millar’s cover was used in a commercial for cooking lager 20 years ago. So, it seems fitting that the Dundonians’ rendition was used for another beer commercial. Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward and Fisher go on tour in April and will share a bill with MacLean [who also has a limited-edition malt whisky named in his honour] and Van Morrisson at the Hebridean Celtic Festival on Stornoway in the summer. www.facebook.com/AndersonMcGintyWebsterWardandFisher

Homework www.wearehomework.com who boast one of Scotland’s most awe-inspiring drummers, release their lead single It’s All Over on 25 March and will perform a live session on Vic Galloway’s Radio Scotland show that same evening. The band will also be playing several dates across Scotland in the run-up to the release of their debut album 13 Towers in May and they are promising some interesting surprises for its launch.
