Scotland On Sunday, 22 May 2016, Anna Meredith

Classical music fans will be familiar with Anna Meredith whose accolades include being Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Her piece Connect It was an integral part of the award-winning BBC Ten Pieces project, introducing half of all UK school children to classical music, and her compositions have featured on broadcasts, films and concerts worldwide.

The artist recently released her debut album Varmints which has been long-listed for the Scottish Album of the Year Award. Mixing electronica, contemporary classical, experimental rock and pop, with intermittent bursts of tuba and cello, we witnessed Meredith and band play incredible, genre-bending performances last week at Glasgow’s The Hug & Pint and at the Great Escape festival.

Meredith and her band are booked to appear at various festivals this summer, and her classical music will be performed by the likes of Scottish Ensemble [in June] and Scottish Chamber Orchestra [in December].

Scotland On Sunday, 15 May 2016, Mark W. Georgsson

Faces and Places is the debut album from Mark W. Georgsson produced by Rod Jones of Idlewild, and the single, ‘The Ballad of the Nearly Man’ is due to be released by Last Night From Glasgow Records on 2 June.

The song is a duet with Katie McArthur and the B-side features an Icelandic version by Sigríður Thorlacius and Arnari Guðjónssyni [singer from Icelandic band Leaves].

The label is as exciting as the record – a crowd-funded concept with members paying £50 a year in return for the label’s output and access to members-only gigs. The first of these is the launch party, featuring acts from the label’s roster, somewhere in Glasgow on 2 June.

Georgsson also plays Electric Fields at Drumlanrig Castle in August and Iceland Airwaves in Reykjavik in November.
