SUN ROSE Artist of the Week in Scotland On Sunday

Scotland On Sunday, 12 November 2017, Sun Rose

Long-standing readers of this column might recall our enthusiasm for electronic outfit Nevada Base, whose track Love In My Mind was a firm favourite of 2011. So we were pleased to discover a musical phoenix had risen from the band’s ashes in the form of Sun Rose (not to be confused with Swiss duo SunRose or Australian outfit Sunrose).

Earlier this year their debut track, Smirk, was named single of the week on Radio Scotland’s Janice Forsyth show and the follow-up, Minima, is equally promising. Boasting a more atmospheric feel with dreamy vocals and attractive piano interludes, it also appears on the album The Essential Luxury, mixed by Miaoux Miaoux and released on vinyl by the discerning Last Night From Glasgow Records. Anyone ordering a copy from the label’s online shop, gets a free ticket for a special launch gig at Nice N Sleazy in Glasgow on Friday. Visit www.lastnightfromglasgow.com

Under the Radar is in association with Off Axis, a touring and gig swapping network enabling artists to play successful shows and festivals, in over 75 towns and cities across the UK. Look out for Off Axis gig on 22 December in Bathgate register at https://whatisoffaxis.com

Prehistoric Friends is the solo project of multi-instrumentalist Liam Chapman who performs in several excellent bands, including Supermoon, Miaoux Miaoux and Friends In America.

On record, Chapman is joined by Nichola Kerr of Glasgow Chamber Orchestra, who contributes sublime string arrangements. Live, the band becomes a super-group quintet, featuring Julian Corrie of Miaoux Miaoux plus Joe Rattray and Louis Abbot of Admiral Fallow.

Chapman’s dreamy vocals, Kerr’s viola strings, organs and drum machines combine to create gentle, atmospheric indie-pop soundscapes that wouldn’t be out of place on a film soundtrack.

Prehistoric Friends release their self-titled debut album at a launch event at The Hug and Pint in Glasgow on 23 October with support from eagleowl. In a nice modern/ancient twist, 50 handmade fossil casts encasing the LP download code and an accompanying booklet are available. Listen at https://soundcloud.com/prehistoric-friends

Olaf Furniss and Derick Mackinnon run the Born To Be Wide music industry seminar evening. Their next event takes place on Thursday 1 October and features an interview with Neu! Reekie! founder Kevin Williamson, followed by a discussion about creating and sustaining a scene.
