SHOGUN Artist of the Week in Scotland On Sunday

Scotland On Sunday, 14 May 2017, Shogun

Nineteen-year-old Joe Heron, from Paisley, AKA Shogun is one of the fastest rising stars being associated with the increasingly popular Grime genre.

The young rapper/emcee’s lyrics are sharp, perceptive and politically charged. Videos for recent tracks ‘Unrivalled’ and ‘Vulcan’ have been viewed nearly three million times on YouTube and he featured on a recent BBC documentary highlighting some of the UK’s best new artists.

He has shared a bill with acts like Lowkey and Akala, performed at Tenement TV’s Tenement Trail festival, and is set to release debut EP ‘Katana’ in the next couple of months.

See Shogun live at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton on Friday (19 May), in Bristol, Manchester and London in June and Glasgow’s ABC venue on 1 July. Watch the videos of Shogun HERE or below

Scotland On Sunday, 22 May 2016, Anna Meredith

Classical music fans will be familiar with Anna Meredith whose accolades include being Composer in Residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Her piece Connect It was an integral part of the award-winning BBC Ten Pieces project, introducing half of all UK school children to classical music, and her compositions have featured on broadcasts, films and concerts worldwide.

The artist recently released her debut album Varmints which has been long-listed for the Scottish Album of the Year Award. Mixing electronica, contemporary classical, experimental rock and pop, with intermittent bursts of tuba and cello, we witnessed Meredith and band play incredible, genre-bending performances last week at Glasgow’s The Hug & Pint and at the Great Escape festival.

Meredith and her band are booked to appear at various festivals this summer, and her classical music will be performed by the likes of Scottish Ensemble [in June] and Scottish Chamber Orchestra [in December].
