Glasgow-based techno trio ROMAN NOSE burst into the collective consciousness at last year’s T In The Park when their T Break appearance had to be cancelled after a pint was spilled on the sound desk.However, the band were later upgraded to a slot in a packed King Tut’s tent, where their ferociously excellent combination of screaming synths and bass-heavy beats, combined with a penchant for scary masks, went down a storm. Last month Roman Nose self-released their fantastic debut EP, Youthclubbed, which has picked up much-deserved airplay on Ally McCrae’s BBC Radio 1 show and Jim Gellatly’s In:Demand Uncut. They will be appearing live at the Scottish Alternative Music Awards (officialsama.co.uk) at Glasgow’s Garage tomorrow night, where they are also nominated for the Best Electronic Act gong. Submissions from all genres are invited and acts should send links to 3 of their strongest songs, which will be considered by a panel of music industry judges. The deadline is 29 March, apply at www.tennents.com/tbreak Two years ago RockNess co-founder Robert Hicks withdrew from the festival to concentrate on managing Rachel Sermanni, who is released on his label Middle Of Nowhere Records. The label is now set to expand its roster with Pete Roe, who is closely involved with the Communion/Mumford & Sons scene which helped Sermanni early in her career. The Doghouse will reopen this month under the new name 20 Rocks, with Dougie Black continuing as the venue’s live booker.And still in the City Of Discovery, local act Anderson, McGinty, Webster, Ward and Fisher recently collaborated with Scottish folk legend Dougie MacLean to record a new version of Caledonia. The song was originally popularised when Frankie Millar’s cover was used in a commercial for cooking lager 20 years ago. So, it seems fitting that the Dundonians’ rendition was used for another beer commercial.
