Upturned Boats | Off Axis Artist of the Week in Scotland On Sunday, 9 March 2025
Pan-Scottish band Upturned Boats would have felt right at home as part of the legendary Fence Collective, write Derick Mackinnon and Olaf Furniss read Scotsman.com
Based in Glasgow, Upturned Boats hail from various parts of Scotland from rural Aberdeenshire to a West Lothian village, with members boasting an impressive pedigree playing with bands including Randolph’s Leap, State Broadcasters and Inspector Tapehead.
Despite describing themselves as purveyors of sad indie, they combine a touching lyrical style with endearing gentle, sound which would have been very much at home with the legendary Fence Collective. This is the result of a writing process which sees frontman Graeme Black providing the words and basic melody, with the rest of the band adding their parts and together building the arrangements.
Upturned Boats have already caught the attention of tastemakers Gideon Coe (BBC 6Music, Roddy Hart (Radio Scotland) and Jim Gellatly (Amazing Radio), as well as landing support slots with LT Leif, Modern Studies and American singer-songwriter Jill Andrews.
Their debut EP, also called Upturned Boats, is a collection of six wonderful tracks produced by Iain Hutchison, who has previously worked with the likes of Kris Drever, Adam Holmes and Siobhan Miller. Available of CD and digitally, it came out on Friday with an album set to follow at the end of the year https://www.instagram.com/upturnedboats
