Uncle Kid
INTRODUCING: Uncle Kid
Introducing Edinburgh-based Uncle Kid, with his unnerving, sparse debut single, Supermarket Sweep released on Friday 13th November. It’s a trip hop, spoken word glitchy electronica track, conveying the uneasy, anxiety we’re all experiencing during the coronavirus pandemic. Supermarket Sweep also features some “radiator drumming,” pens used as drumsticks, very appropriate for the Covid-19 era.
He’s so far been praised by BBC Radio 6 Music and Fresh on the Net legend Tom Robinson. Uncle Kid produces all his own material, and for this song has teamed up with visual artist Alan Brown, to create an unsettling video. Filmed everyday during lockdown, the viewer's gaze is held while he evolves from clean-shaven, to a heavily bearded, castaway version of himself. Brown's glitchy, and warhole-esque production adds to the general sense of unease.
