Artist of the Week in Scotland On Sunday, printed 22 March 2020 | Words by Derick Mackinnon and Olaf Furniss.  In association with AIM (Association of Independent Music) read on Scotsman.com

When Check Masses launched their excellent debut single, Dripn Angel, to a sold out Edinburgh show a few weeks ago, the audience was a Who’s Who of the city’s club promoters and DJs going back to the early 1990s. And given who was on the stage, it was hardly surprising that the band attracted such strong interest.

Andy McGroarty and Philly Angelo Collins have a hip-hop and soul CV dating back almost 30 years, while Vic Galloway has been hosting his genre-stretching show on BBC Radio Scotland for two decades. Check Masses began collaborating back in 2016 and their collection of songs is the musical equivalent of slow food, combining a tasty mix of ingredients from reggae to psychedelic surf guitar. Their debut album, Nightlife, is released on the excellent Triassic Tusk Records in June, while a second single, Lonesome Little Paradise, came out on Friday. We recommend, ahem, checking them out. 29 May their album NIGHT LIFE is released visit https://checkmasses.bandcamp.com
