To readers of this column in its previous incarnation, Highland act Garden Of Elks will be a familiar name, having featured regularly since the band’s inception three years ago.April saw the release of the release of their debut album, A Distorted Sigh, on Edinburgh’s Song By Toad label, which was produced by Marcus Mackay [the creative other half of SAY Award winner, Kathryn Joseph]. Around the same time, frontman Niall Strachen downsized to performing solo, a move partly brought about by drummer Paul Bannon taking up a job on a cruise ship. The frenetic, fuzz laden single, I Hid Inside [video below], is sure to appeal to fans of The Pixies and The Jesus and Mary Chain and a live appearance at Edinburgh’s Electric Circus is in the diary for 13 September.Strachen, who has an archive of 250 unreleased songs, then heads over to New York, to play the prestigious CMJ showcase festival. Despite the new slimline-up, Garden Of Elks’ sound remains decidedly beefy!
